Historical Romance Annotation

  1. Sounds like a made for tv movie! This genre seems to lend itself well to made for tv movies, especially if it is a star crossed love affair between royalty and a commoner. This seems to have a different twist with a historical feel, although the cover leads me to believe it is a modern day fairytale.

  2. A prime example of a "don't judge a book by its cover." That cover does not look like it has anything to do with Victorian England!

  3. The Victorian Age lasted almost 60 years, so that's a wide spread of various fashions. Below is a link I found of what women's' fashions were back then. After comparing the cover of the novel and the website, I would say the dress is fairly accurate, only missing sleeves.

    1. I have patrons tell me all the time that they (and I know I do it) judge books by their covers. I have to wonder if some publishers just do not put all that much effort into cover design. I know they want to, and most likely think they do, but without a really good background in time periods, they come up short. Authors should get more say in developing covers. I'm liking the book I'm reading right now because it has a simple cover and nothing to invoke the storyline - that is, not to give anything away or misrepresent the contents of the book.

    2. I agree that authors should have a say in their cover designs. I've read many authors complain about their covers and once they are no longer under contract with a publisher (can take several years for some), they go back and republish the novel with a different cover.

    3. I heard that Barnes and Noble has HUGE say in what covers look like. On reprints they can make publishers change the cover if they don't think it will sell!
